Mini Sessions vs Full Sessions: Which Is Right for You?
Choices… choices!
I realize this topic would have been good to post about a few months ago, before my fall season was almost fully booked! But I’ve been wanting to post about this topic for awhile, so it’s better late than never, am I right?!
Choosing between a mini session and full session can feel tricky. Many families in Columbus and Westerville ask me this same question, so I wanted to lay out the differences here to help you decide!
As a Columbus family photographer, I offer both mini sessions all around Columbus and Westerville Ohio during specific times of the year, and full sessions all year long. Both options create beautiful family photos. The right pick depends on what your family needs right now. Let me break down exactly what each option offers so you can pick with confidence.
What Is a Mini Session?
Mini sessions are short, quick photo shoots that happen only on specific dates. I set up at one beautiful location and photograph several families back to back.
Each mini session lasts for 20 minutes. You get focused time to capture your family’s current stage. The price point is lower than full sessions because of the shorter time frame and less images.
These sessions fill up fast. I only offer limited spots on each mini session day. Families love them for updated photos and holiday cards.
The quick pace can keep kids engaged as they don’t have time to get bored or cranky. However, having more time for them to warm up and open up can often be a better choice. More on that shortly!
I often photograph families with young kiddos, and parents sometimes worry that 20 minutes won’t be enough time. But we move quickly from pose to pose, keeping their interest the whole time.
Mini sessions work great when you need fresh photos but want to keep things quick, simple and affordable.

What Is a Full Session?
Full sessions give you much more time and flexibility. These sessions last 45 to 90 minutes depending on your family’s needs.
You can pick your location (even two if you want!) and start time. We can change outfits if you want. There’s time for candid play, different poses, and including pets or extended family.
The slower pace helps everyone relax. This works especially well for shy kids or toddlers who need time to warm up to me. Some little ones take 10 or 15 minutes to feel comfortable. Full sessions give us that breathing room, whereas if we’d been doing a mini session, the kiddos would be warmed up just as we finished.
Full sessions are also perfect for big milestones. Think senior photos, maternity shoots, anniversary celebrations, or large family gatherings. When you want to document an important time in your family’s life, full sessions deliver.
I can get creative with different spots at the same location. We might start by a lake, then move to a field, then end under some pretty trees. This variety gives you many different looks in one session.
The extra time also means more photos for you to choose from. Instead of a few perfect shots, you get a whole story of your family’s personality.

Mini Session vs Full Session: Key Differences
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you see the main differences:
Mini Session
- Quick and affordable option
- Perfect for holiday cards and seasonal themes
- Limited spots available on set dates
- Less variety in poses and one predetermined location
- Great for busy families who want a few updated photos
- 5 hand edited, full resolution digital images of your choice from an online gallery, plus the option to purchase more
Full Session
- Flexible scheduling and location choices – completely customizable to you
- Lots of variety and creative options
- Better for big milestones and special occasions
- More time for kids to warm up and relax – no stress!
- Perfect when you want a complete photo story
- Includes all of my hand edited, full resolution digital images from an online gallery, usually 60+ photos!
Both options create beautiful family photos. The choice comes down to your current needs, schedule, and budget.

How to Decide Which Is Right for Your Family
Mini sessions work best when you want updated photos without a big time or money commitment. They’re perfect if you need photos for holiday cards or just want to capture how your kids have grown since last year, what stage of life they’re in, etc.
Full sessions are the better choice when you’re celebrating something special. Maybe your oldest is graduating or you’re expecting a new baby. These milestone moments deserve the extra time and attention a full session provides.
Think about your family’s comfort level too. If your kids are naturally outgoing, a mini session might be perfect. If someone needs extra time to open up and feel comfortable, book a full session.
Consider your goals for the photos. Do you just need a few great shots for cards and social media? A mini session delivers exactly that. Do you want a complete collection that tells your family’s story? Go with a full session.

There’s no wrong choice between mini and full sessions. Both deliver beautiful, professional photos. The right option is simply what works best for your family’s current situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do mini sessions work well for toddlers? Yes, often the short format works in your favor. Toddlers stay engaged when we move quickly. They don’t have time to get bored or overwhelmed.
Can we bring pets? For full sessions, absolutely. For mini sessions, it depends on the location rules and setup. I’ll let you know what’s possible when you book. (You know I always prefer to have our furry family members included in our photos!)
What if my child needs more time to warm up? Book a full session to allow extra space for comfort. Some kids need 10 or 15 minutes to feel relaxed with me. Full sessions give us that time.
Will I get enough photos from a mini session? You’ll choose 5 of your favorite images from a small online gallery of strong, frame-worthy shots, perfect for cards and gifts. You”ll have the option to purchase more images, whether individuals or the entire gallery.
How far in advance should I book? Mini sessions sell out quickly, often within days of announcement. Full sessions are best booked 4 to 6 weeks in advance for the best date and time options, but always send me a message, either way I will do my very best to get you on my schedule!
