Fall in Ohio is fast, beautiful, and full of color. It’s also one of the best times of year to update your family photos! If you’ve been searching for fall mini sessions in Columbus, Ohio or fall family photos in Westerville, you’re in the right place.
I’m Christy, a family and senior photographer based in Westerville, and I’m here to take the stress out of your family photo session! Whether you’ve booked a mini session before or it’s your first time, this guide will walk you through what to expect, how to prep, and how to book.
What Is a Fall Mini Session?
A mini session is a short and sweet version of a full session. It lasts only 20 minutes, which makes it perfect for families with young kids, busy schedules, or just a short attention span.
You still get a bunch of great photos. We just move a little faster and keep things simple.
With my minis, you’ll get 5 full resolution digital images of your choice. They are typically delivered to you a few weeks after your session in an online gallery, and you have the option to purchase more images – single photos or the full gallery!

- A quick and fun experience with beautiful results
👉 Unpopular opinion: Mini sessions are not always meant to replace a full length session. I truly believe that often MORE time is better, especially for kiddos. We can take our time to let them open up, build trust with me, explore the location and let them get some energy out without feeling the pressure of a small time frame. However, if you’re working with me for the first time or you just need a few beautiful, updated photos of your favorite people, a mini session might be perfect for you!
Why Fall is the Best Time for Photos in Columbus
Let’s be honest… Ohio fall doesn’t stick around long. One day it’s 70 and sunny, the next it’s cold and gray. But when it’s good—it’s REALLY good.
The colors in October are gorgeous. Warm golds, soft reds, crunchy leaves, and that cozy fall light you can’t get in summer.
It’s also the time of year when families are planning ahead. That’s why fall mini sessions book up fast!
What to Expect at Your Mini Session
Mini sessions are quick, fun, and low-stress. You’ll show up, Sarah and I will guide you through some relaxed poses, and we’ll keep things light and simple.
Here’s what you can expect:
- 20 minutes of shooting time
- Light posing mixed with natural moments
- A fun, low-pressure vibe
- A full online gallery with a mix of posed and candid photos
These sessions are fast—but that’s part of the magic. It’s enough time to get what we need without tiring out the kids.

Each mini session includes:
- 20 minutes at a pre-selected location
- A private online gallery delivered within 2 weeks
- 5 high-resolution digital images (with the option to purchase more)
- Print release for personal use
- Access to professional prints and albums if you’d like to order
Photographer Tips to Make It Easy
Here are a few quick tips to help you get the most from your session:
- Choose comfy, coordinated outfits—no need to match perfectly
- Layers are great for fall
- Bring a snack or toy for little ones. I often bring a treat basket so kiddos can choose a reward at the end of our session!
- Arrive early to avoid stress
- Don’t worry about forced smiles—natural is better

FAQ
What should we wear?
In a nutshell: Soft colors, layers, and comfy clothes work best. When you’re comfortable and confident, it shows! Avoid logos and neon.
What happens if it rains?
We’ll reschedule. I keep backup dates ready just in case.
Can I bring grandparents or a pet?
Minis are limited to one household. For more people, ask about a full session. You know I LOVE pets and always want to include them. Ask me first just in case this year’s location doesn’t allow them.
What if my child doesn’t smile?
No stress! We focus on connection, not perfection. Real moments are just as beautiful.
Can we upgrade to a full session later?
Yes! If you want more time, images, or a custom location, I’ve got options.

It truly feels like just yesterday that I was taking photos of this sweet little guy when he was 2 weeks old.

MADILYN – 2027 Senior! ☀️🎓✨
I think this was the one evening out of a two week block that we had gorgeous light and no rain! Rest assured, we took advantage of it – what a perfect shoot to have on such a wonderful night! Madilyn is amazing, beautiful inside and out. She`s wonderfully easy going, kind and down to earth, and super comfortable in front of the camera! We had such a fantastic time. Tell me I’m wrong!!! The struggle is real. This summer and start of fall have been one of the craziest weather rollercoasters we’ve had to navigate for awhile. I truly agonize over every rescheduling. I hate doing it. I usually wait until the last moment and leave it up to the client to move forward with shooting unless we have severe storm warnings or it’s truly pouring at our location. I really want the session to be relaxed with the best chance of beautiful photos! Sometimes the weather throws us curveballs and we roll with it! Never a dull moment!! Just know that I’m thinking through all of the details. If the storm passes but it’s still sopping wet on the ground and the surfaces/structures at our location, we may have wet shoes, mud and sludge on clothing, hair wilting and makeup running, etc. Sometimes it’s still best to reschedule. Sometimes it’s fine!! Thanks to all of you wonderful people for bearing with your poor local photographers who are trying to make the best call. 🤣🤪🫣☀️

KAI – 2027 Senior!! 🎓✨
Photos with Kai were so relaxed and fun. Why? Kai is cool. But not just cool… he`s cool, considerate, kind, ambitious, but also laid back and chill which all makes the perfect combination. We had a great time checking out Franklinton – I always find new favorite spots there!

Aspen – Class of 2027!! 🎓✨
This session, which we`ve been looking forward to and planning for years, was WONDERFUL. And there is no one more deserving than Aspen! She`s the sweetest, most caring soul, simply gorgeous inside and out. It`s been so fun watching her grow up through my lens (from at least 10 years ago after I met her amazing mom while painting her furniture!!!). The world needs more humans like Aspen. The fact that she is going into early childhood education is PERFECT – it`s a calling that is a gift to the world. Thank you for trusting me with her senior photos, Erin! Olivia – Class of 2027!!
We are all born to do something uniquely meant for us. Some of us know from an early age, while some of us have no idea what we`re doing until age 30 or later (yep, that was me). Olivia has long had a passion for singing, acting, and musical theater and you can just see it in her confidence, the natural way she carries herself, and the passion that beams on her face as she talks about it! We started Ryan`s senior session at the pool last month, and finished up at the park on a day that the rain finally gave us a break! Ryan has such an easy going, good natured presence and I so enjoyed hanging out with him! You`d never guess that the mosquitos were fierce – Ryan was such a good sport.

Sometimes Ohio gives us crazy weather. As photographers, we learn to play close attention and roll with it one way or the other. After torrential rains forced us to reschedule, we ended up with a perfect night for beautiful Brianna’s senior photos! This is another one that makes me emotional – one of Audrey’s besties that we’ve known since her birth and watched grow into a gorgeous, wonderful young woman. I still don’t understand how any of this is possible. But I DO know how much joy it brought me to capture these photos 😭😭🥰🥰 Enjoy your senior year, sweet girl! He makes me laugh – and I mean, tear-wiping, gasping belly laughs – so often, and it’s one of the things I love most about us. Day to day life can be lovely, sunny, fun, and exciting, but it can also hard, trying, discouraging, painful, challenging, and exhausting, and being able to laugh until you cry is a gift. It was so much fun capturing this beauty in my lens! She shares a name with my Elliana, which was so special to me – it`s even spelled the same way! My Ellie and I were so tickled by that.
I was so grateful for an open night on my schedule and the perfect weather to wrap up Ellie`s senior year before she headed off to college. We had such a fun evening – I so loved her laid back, down to earth, joyful presence. And what an amazing, bright future lays before her as a gymnast and a pre med student!! KEIRA – 2027 Senior!! It was such a joy to photograph this beautiful soul – gorgeous inside and out. She`s been a friend to my Audrey for many years – it was always amazing to watch them battle through soccer games together! Warriors in their own right! (They were the Wildcats, but I digress…)

When you love something as much as Ryan loves swimming, you can`t help but stop and take it all in, fully appreciating the passion.
